Those logs are huge man! Could be a nice job, a couple of things I would make sure that I and the customer agree on. Does he want them milled at the log length, or will he allow you to buck them into a more manageable length. What sizes lumber does he want it milled to, or would that be left to your discretion.Depends on what lumber he wants, it could make a big difference in your recovery rate, and your cost to get it done.
How does it work in your neck of the woods, do you need a written agreement, or is a handshake is good enough. Good luck Adam |

Yeah... busted..... Dont tell the guys on the sammi forum I called it a jeep please. They would never let me forget it.
Ok, back to the wood talk....
This guy would let the job open on a handshake, but due to the size of the logs, I think it would be best to write it all down. There is about 1000 bf in each of the big logs. He wants it all milled at length, and he will provide the equipment and labor to move the logs around. He has an old military loader about the size of a 980B with forks for moving things around. I dont think cant hooks will lift these, so we are best off to have them forked. he problem I see with the forks, is that operator error could destroy the bed rails or even knock the saw out of adjustment by bumping them.
He is looking for all 2X4X20' lumber. Labor is going to be a bit rough on this. Moving slabs will be back breaking any way you look at it. If I had an edger it might be more manageable, but I dont so its going to be the hard way.

Gomango,
Well those are some impresive weeds there. Around here thsoe size weeds are hard to come by, we general saw those into Bar Tops around here. Maybe if you take your tractor over with you, you could slide the slabs onto your forks from the logs. I would ask to be able to keep the slab wood, a lot of firewood there. Well good luck, but it breaks my heart to see those go for 2x4s. Imagine the wide palnk flooring those would make. | There should be some nice slabs in that job. A 20' log with a little sweep will have some nice heavy slabs. Adam |

Sometimes it's funny how my mind works. Today I was hauling home a load of free WALNUT logs, yep that right. I said, free walnut logs, 14 total and was thinking about this site and how it's made it possible for me to use my mill to utilize these logs instead of cutting them into firewood. I was thinking about some of the old posts from over the years and for some reason this post came to mind and I was thinking that I must have missed what the outcome was. Unless some how I missed it in another forum, I'm still wondering if Gomango got the bid and had to rebuild his bunks after flattening his mill on those big logs. How many of you guys out there are doing custom milling. I have people asking me all the time about custom milling but I keep putting them all off until I get some of the finishing touches on my mill. Also, I don't hardly have the time to acomplish my own logs let alone someone elses.
